Guru Fateh!
Welcome to More of This, Please: Sikh Wisdom for Today’s World! I’m your guide, Simran Jeet Singh, a Sikh scholar, activist, and practitioner. I’m also the author of the national bestseller The Light We Give: How Sikh Wisdom Can Transform Your Life (Riverhead / Penguin Random House, 2022).
I’ve spent my life studying and practicing Sikh teachings, and as much as I’ve gained, I have so much more to learn. After all, to be a Sikh is to be a life-long student. It’s a path that requires humility, curiosity, and commitment.
Through my years of research and learning, I have come to believe that the Sikh Gurus had a unique way of looking at the world and that applying just a fraction of their teachings could radically transform our lives. In a world that feels complicated and challenging and scary, Sikh wisdom is a balm for our lives. The insights are for everyone, whether you identify as Sikh or not — and that’s why I’m committed to making this space inclusive for everyone. It’s also why I’m so grateful to have you here.
In addition to being the author of The Light We Give: How Sikh Wisdom Can Transform Your Life, I also write children’s books, including A Vaisakhi to Remember and Fauja Singh Keeps Going: The True Story of the Oldest Person to Ever Run a Marathon. I host a podcast for PRX called Wisdom & Practice, and I’m a professor at Union Theological Seminary and an adviser for the Aspen Institute’s Religion & Society Program. I have degrees from Columbia, Harvard, and Trinity, and I wrote my dissertation on the Puratan Janamsakhi, the earliest account of Guru Nanak’s life. I feel privileged and blessed to live a life of seva (selfless service), and I’m hopeful that this community will be of service to you too.
By subscribing, you’ll have access to all of the content here, and we’ll always aim to keep it that way. You can also sign up a paid subscription, which is not necessary at all. It’s mostly just a nice way to support my continued writing.
Thank you again for joining our little community, and also for sharing and spreading the love.
Happy Reading!
Simran
